Mack Supervises the Citgo Sign Relocation

Boston's famed Citgo Sign, perched above Kenmore Square since 1965, is undergoing a massive move as part of the Kenmore Square redevelopment. Crews from Suffolk Construction are disassembling the 60x60-foot landmark piece by piece so it can be completely refurbished and installed 30 feet higher and 120 feet to the east at its same location atop 660 Beacon Street.

To begin this project, the first thing was the parking lot behind the building had to be emptied so they could place the crane needed for the job. Where would these people now park?

Sign Design & Sales, a contractor for Boston University, was tasked with relocating the parking lot signs and reinstalling them in the Deerfield Street Lot so the project could move forward. Overseeing this phase of the six-month effort was Mississippi Mack — the youngest supervisor at Sign Design & Sales.

Known for his attention to detail, Mack took charge with his official BU contractor ID identifying him as the site lead. Badge clipped. Eyes sharp. Tail at a professional angle.

The sign is officially an approved city landmark, which helped protect it from being permanently removed and led developers to agree on this repositioning. New high-rise developments in Kenmore Square and around Fenway Park had begun obstructing sightlines across the city. Moving the sign upward and eastward ensures it remains highly visible from key vantage points — including inside Fenway Park and the final stretch of the Boston Marathon.

The parking lot signs were relocated. The crane moved in. The Citgo Sign began its journey.
