The Charles River has seen a lot of things over the years. Rowing crews at dawn. Sailboats in the summer. The occasional duck with an attitude. But on a bright June morning in 2026, it saw something new: Mississippi Mack, official site supervisor, posted up on a freshly poured staircase with the quiet authority of a dog who has done this before.
The job began with a practical problem. Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse, nestled along the river in Cambridge, needed a new access stair — a way to move equipment and crew down to the dock without routing everything through the boathouse itself. Reasonable enough.
But to get the permits approved, BU agreed to something more: a public access area along the riverbank, complete with benches and signage, open to anyone who wanted to sit by the water and watch the world go by.

The assignment was clear: install two post-and-panel signs — one marking the Public Pedestrian Access, one designating the Public Viewing Area — so the community would know the space was theirs to enjoy.
Mack arrived on site with his BU contractor ID and immediately assessed the staircase situation. The steps were new. The railing was solid. The view of the river was excellent. He took a position on the stairs — badge visible, expression focused — and began his inspection.
The crew from SD&S set the posts. Leveled the panels. Checked the alignment. Mack watched every move with the practiced eye of a supervisor who has learned that details matter and that nobody cuts corners on his watch.
By the time the second sign was in place, the public viewing area was complete. Benches faced the river. The signs stood straight and true. The Charles rolled past, indifferent and eternal.
Mack gave the finished installation one final look. He approved it.
The public now has a place to sit by the river. BU has its access stair. And somewhere in the official project record, there is a photo of a wonder dog on a staircase that proves exactly who was running this job.
