The Mookie Accord

May 16, 2026

"A visitor arrived from Salisbury, MA — tall, confident, red-collared. Mississippi Mack had never met a local dog before. What happened next would go down in backyard history as the two became life long friends."

His name was Mookie. He arrived without fanfare — no trumpet, no herald, no advance notice — just a red collar, a confident stride, and the unmistakable energy of a dog who had been a New Englander his entire life.

Mack saw him from across the yard and froze. This was new. This was significant. This required protocol.

The initial approach was textbook: a wide arc, nose forward, tail at half-mast — the universal canine signal for "I am interested but I am also prepared to sprint." Mookie, to his considerable credit, held his ground. He had seen this before.

Then something remarkable happened. Mack dropped into a play bow — front legs flat, hindquarters skyward, tail now a full-speed propeller. The invitation was unmistakable. Mookie accepted.

What followed was seventeen minutes of pure, unscripted chaos. Zoomies. Feints. Counter-feints. A brief but spirited disagreement over a stick that was ultimately resolved diplomatically. The humans stood at the edge of the yard, phones out, grinning.

By the time Mookie's humans came to bring him home, the terms of the Mookie Accord had been established: the yard was shared territory, all sticks were community property, and both parties reserved the right to initiate zoomies at any time without prior notice.

Mack watched him go. Then he picked up the stick, carried it to the center of the yard, and lay down on it.

Some things, a legend keeps for himself.
